The New Main Street, Million Dollar Road to Nowhere

Alley behind 5-Star with new Main St. on the right

This spring the Main Street extension project was completed. Main Street was extended 2,000 feet to the south. Then the entrance to the cemetery was repaved to meet the new street. That is about 600 feet. This is First Class work: nice and wide, deep asphalt, concrete curbs, sidewalks. It cost over $1,000,000. This was an Indiana Department of Transportation project.

This is a road to nowhere, with nothing on the way there. The Project starts at the intersection on Main Street and Redskin Trail. Proceeding South along the $1,000,000 Street, we have the alley behind the 5-Star Mall (on the left) and the High School tennis courts (on the right). The School property continues on the right about 1,200 feet. On the left, once you get past the hind end of 5-Star there is a vacant lot that is behind the carwash, McDonalds, and the bank. This developable land is about 375 linear feet. Further on, on the left side is the subsidized apartment complex and the Sandy Acres Park. On the right side, once you get past the high school’s property, there is about 750 linear feet of wooded area that may be in private hands. Then the Million Dollar Road to Nowhere turns east to hook up with US 35 on the cemetery road (150 S). There is about 300 linear feet of vacant land behind the church. The rest of the way has the park on the left and the church on the right. This gives us access to a total of about 1, 425 linear feet of developable land. The cost of the project was $1,051, 000. So that is a cost to you and me of $737 per linear foot. To put that in perspective, that means a 100-foot lot, 1 city block deep, now has a government investment of $73,700. Is there any sane businessman or even human being that would even pay that much for a lot on this Godforsaken stretch of road? I doubt it. There is no commercial reason whatsoever that there will ever be any traffic on this road.

Worthless! Stupid!

Hmm. Makes me wonder who owns those few feet of developable land in question. I'll have to check that out!

Please be careful when you throw math around. Many Knox residents wouldn't understand your point.

Now wait a minute! That's my favorite way out of Knox you're talking about. It used to be Knox's best kept secret until you put it on your blog.

There's never any traffic, and there are no traffic lights. Well once there were a couple kids goofing around with flashlights.

My only complaint is having to look at the backside of the "mall". Seems like they could have at least put up a high fence like the junk yards have.

Let's face it. How many towns Knox's size have a limited access highway where most would only have an alley?

Really the only thing missing is a name for this highway. Perhaps that would be an appropriate topic for the blog?

Let's see, who best exemplifies what this roadway stands for...
and it does run right past the school...

Regarding, Math skills, Knox residents are hardly alone on becoming pertified in the presence of simple computation. Regarding Indiana and Math: I refer you to bill #246 of the 1897 sitting of the Indiana General Assembly, that came close to passing.

Regarding a name for the road: Million Dollar Lane perhaps?

I heard that a motion to sell the city park south of the senior apartment complex which runs along the new stretch of 150 S. was put out to the city council by our mayor (more than once). I was also told by a reliable source that mayor's big brother Chuck (county councilman) had an interested buyer for the park. My theory is 1. Estok's are looking to buy for themselves to turn into profit or 2. The prospective buyer is offering a nice bonus for a sell.

I am outraged at the idea that city property could be sold off for personal gain!!

I am not familiar with this issue. However, I do believe that the Knox Park Board has title to this property and not the City of Knox. The city council or the Mayor has appointments to the Park Board, so we need to watch this possibility closely.

I said (and this was the point):

"To put that in perspective, that means a 100-foot lot, 1 city block deep, now has a government investment of $73,700."

You made no response to this point in your comment.

Do you realize that the initial plan for the Main Street Annex was initiated by the Knox Community School Corporation because of the extensive new sports complex south of the high school, which had no emergency vehicle access? Not only has the extension of Main Street made our school facilities safer, it has allieviated alot of traffic, and could lead to new retail in the future. So laugh all you want, they laughed at Mayor Dailey when he installed a bridge to Indiana known as the skyway, and a train in the center of an expressway known as the CTA. It's all progress for a brighter future. Live with it and be proud!
